We’re Well Wednesdays – Meet the Microbiome!

Last week we learnt how important getting good sleep is to keep our immune system strong.

When it comes to looking after our immune system, it’s also very important to look after our gut health because 70—80% of our immune system is found in our gut.

The ‘gut’ is another name we give to our digestive system. When we talk about looking after our gut health, we mean keeping our digestive system working as well as possible.
A big part of gut health is looking after what we call our gut microbiome. This is the community of millions to trillions (yes, trillions!) of bacteria, fungi and yeast that live in our digestive system. Many of these micro-organisms do important jobs to keep us healthy, including helping to absorb nutrients from our food, making vitamins and teaching our immune system what to attack and what to leave alone. Scientists are also finding more and more evidence that a healthy gut and microbiome is important for good mental health.
